The movie is modernized so that it takes place in a high school. In the play the two women are daughters of the Lord of Padua. The differences between these two pieces of work are also fairly obvious. They do fall in love with Katherine and Kat in the end. ![]() The same thing happens in the movie when Patrick agrees to date Kat for the money presented to him. Another example is that Petruchio, at first, only agrees to marry Katherine for the dowry. In the movie, Cameron tutors Bianca as a French tutor. ![]() Such as when Hortensio (another man after Katherine, equivalent to Joey in the movie) and Lucentio act as tutors because that is the only way they can be with Bianca. Their are some more subtle similarities in the stories as well. Out to find someone to wed Katherine (Kat). The base of both stories is that Lucentio (Patrick) wants to get with Bianca, but cannot due to the father’s rule. Lucentio in “The Taming of the Shrew” is the same as Cameron in “10 Things I hate About You”. The “tamer of the shrew” in Shakespeare’s version is Petruchio, while the film version equivalent of Petruchio is Patrick. Katherine in “The Taming of the Shrew” is equivalent to Kat in “10 Things I Hate About You”, both being the “shrews”. The similarities between these two works are fairly obvious. The gist of it is that Cameron ends up with Bianca, and the bad-boy of the high school, Patrick, ends up with Kat. The story continues in a similar pattern as “The Taming of the Shrew” except obviously in a different time and setting, and with a little different plot and twists. That was a rule set up by their father Walter. Kat does not seem interested in dating and that is unfortunate for Bianca as she is interested in dating but not allowed to participate in the dating game unless Kat does as well. Bianca has an older sister named Kat who is the less popular of the two sisters and is sort of an outcast. The movie “10 Things I Hate About You” is about a new student, named Cameron, at Padua High School who immediately falls in love with the beautiful and popular Bianca Stratford. In the end, Petruchio ends up “taming the shrew” and a man named Lucentio ends up winning Bianca and they marry as well. The story continues with men competing for Bianca, and a man named Petruchio interested in marrying Katherine for money. The problem however is that Bianca and Katherine’s father, Baptista Minola, forbids Bianca to marry until Katherine does. Bianca is considered very marriageable and is sought after by many of the nobles. However, her younger sister Bianca is a different story. It is thought that no man would ever want Katherine due to the fact that she would be temperamental and disobedient. The play “The Taming of the Shrew”, is basically about a “shrew” named Katherine Minola who is infamous for having a bad temper and being volatile. ![]() The modern film version was changed to suit a different audience of the time period and contained more up-to-date features. They are obviously both similar due to the fact that “10 Things I Hate About You” was a remake of the original, but they are not completely the same. In 1999, a modern version of Shakespeare’s piece was created into a film called “10 Things I hate About You”. William Shakespeare wrote a famous piece called “The Taming of the Shrew” in the late 16th century.
